There's much to be said from making life out of a simple box, as many 3D Character Artists do. As a 3D Character Artist, you are using your creative mind and pre existing knowledge of fine arts to push any 2D concepts you are given into a living, almost breathing reality (we'll leave the breathing to the animators). You will be pushing a character's groundwork to new levels and exceeding depths beyond what can simply exist in a 2D realm. This 3D character you manifest will be the life, movement and emotion that will engage the viewers directly. For 3D Character Artists in games, you will not only be required to procure an outstanding model, but also the UV maps and textures associated with it as well. The modeling process is essentially the same for both film and games. The timeframe for the modeling process can range anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months (per character).
Texturing is the process of adding color and tone to your characters. This helps fully realize the characters final form and overall appearance to the audience. Shader creations are made to provide separation between skin, metal, hair and other surfaces. Many factors are dealt with during this proccess which includes but not limited to : Hair vs fur, wetness vs dampness vs a smooth reflective surface or rough surface. In the end, UV mapping, shader creations and painting is a very important step in finalizing what is to be seen in the end product- a believable character that looks like it belongs. The timeframe for the texturing process can vary from 2 weeks to 3 months (per character).
When you finish your character and have optimized it, ensured the model and texture pass by the art director(s) and you are happy with it, it's time to move on to the rigging stage. This stage will be passed onto technical designers to set your character up to be posed and animated.
